  1. This Blog is a representation of the important aspects within the course Trends and Issues in Literacy Instruction. It shows how our understanding of literacy learning has expanded to not only include how to simply read and write but how to interact with literacy in meaningful ways. There are many forms of literacy today which include visual literacy, critical literacy, technological literacy, functional literacy, new media literacy, cultural literacy just to name a few. Please visit the Canadian Education Association for more examples and definitions: http://www.cea-ace.ca/foo.cfm?subsection=lit&page=fra&subpage=wha&subsubpage=typ
As teachers we are changing the way we teach literacy in order to reach all students from all walks of life. Motivating and engaging our students in learning involves incorporating these many forms of literacy. This in turn gives teachers the opportunity to open the door to new ways of showing, expressing and defining students' learning and engaging them in authentic and meaningful interaction with literacy, helping them to understand themselves, others and the world around them.
